Aluminium battens offer architects a powerful way to shape light, shadow and movement across a façade

Beyond colour and finish, the way battens are spaced plays a critical role in defining the overall character of a building.

Spacing influences how solid or open a façade appears, how it responds to scale and how it performs in real-world conditions.

Whether you are designing for screening, visual definition or architectural impact, here are the key factors to consider when planning batten spacing for your next project.

Start with the visual rhythm you want to create

Spacing directly influences how a façade is read from the street.

Closer spacing creates a more solid, refined appearance. It can feel more structured and intentional, especially when combined with taller battens that draw the eye upward.

Wider spacing allows more light and transparency between elements. This can soften the overall composition and introduce a lighter, more open expression.

Before locking in measurements, step back and ask:

  • Are you aiming for screening?
  • Subtle articulation?
  • Or a strong, sculptural façade statement?

Consider batten size and proportion

Batten spacing should always be considered alongside batten width and height.

A slim 30mm batten spaced widely will create a very different effect to a 50mm batten with minimal gaps. Likewise, taller battens amplify shadow and depth, which can dramatically shift the façade’s character.

ZINTL battens are available in multiple extrusion profiles, including 30mm, 40mm and 50mm widths, with outer heights ranging from 50mm through to 300mm.

This flexibility allows specifiers to balance scale and spacing to suit both residential and large-scale commercial applications.

As a general guide:

Smaller battens with tighter spacing create fine, detailed façades
Larger battens with varied spacing create bold, expressive elevations.

Proportion matters just as much as the gap itself.

Define the functional requirement

Batten spacing is not purely aesthetic. It often serves a functional purpose.

For screening applications, such as car parks or plant areas, spacing may be calculated to achieve a required level of visual privacy while still allowing ventilation.

For sun shading, spacing can be designed to reduce glare and heat load depending on orientation and solar angles.

For purely decorative applications, spacing may be more flexible, guided by visual impact rather than performance targets.

Early coordination with the design and engineering team ensures spacing supports both intent and compliance.

Account for building scale and viewing distance

A spacing detail that works beautifully on a townhouse may feel visually busy on a large civic building.

On larger façades, slightly increased spacing can prevent the surface from appearing overly dense. In contrast, on smaller projects, tighter spacing can add refinement and visual interest without overwhelming the elevation.

Always test spacing against scale. Mock-ups and renders are particularly helpful when assessing shadow lines and rhythm at different viewing distances.

Think about installation and modular consistency

Consistency is key when working with architectural battens.

Systems that offer standardised extrusion sizes and modular components simplify coordination between spacing, fixing and alignment. ZINTL’s snap-in aluminium batten system, available in 6.5 metre stock lengths, allows designers to achieve accurate, repeatable spacing across elevations while supporting efficient installation.

By working within a modular system, spacing decisions can be translated seamlessly from concept through to construction.

Specify with confidence

Choosing the right batten spacing is about more than selecting a gap dimension. It is about understanding rhythm, proportion, light, performance and scale, and how they interact across the entire façade.

With a wide range of extrusion sizes, heights and finishes, ZINTL aluminium battens give architects the flexibility to fine-tune spacing to suit their design vision, while maintaining consistency, durability and long-term performance.
